Who we are

A senior engineering team, not a staffing pipeline.

Founded in San Antonio in 2014, CypressBit designs and builds custom software, open-source platforms, and applied AI/ML systems for public-sector, education, and commercial clients. We work as a small, hands-on team of principal-level engineers — the people who scope your project are the people who ship it.

As a Hispanic-owned, minority-owned small business and Texas HUB certified firm, we bring both technical depth and socioeconomic contracting credentials to federal and state engagements, whether as a prime on the open market or as a subcontractor/teaming partner.

Ruben Quinones

Principal Engineer & Founder

15+ years building Python, cloud, and AI/ML systems — formerly Senior Software Architect at Cisco (Duo Security) and Principal Software Engineer at ClearDATA. Creator of SMBS, our open-source Django platform, and AWS/GCP certified.

What we do

Four disciplines, one team.

We don’t hand off between departments — the same engineers carry a project from architecture through deployment and long-term maintenance.

Custom Software

Python/Django applications, REST APIs, and web/mobile platforms (React, Flutter) engineered around your workflows, not a template.

Open Source Engineering

We build and maintain SMBS, an MIT-licensed modular Django platform, and contribute transparent, auditable code — a natural fit for government transparency requirements.

Deployment & Maintenance

Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and infrastructure on AWS and GCP, with ongoing operational support — we stay accountable after go-live.

Applied AI, Computer Vision & ML

Custom-trained PyTorch object-detection and image-recognition models, data pipelines, and Py-Shiny analytical dashboards — from computer vision to economic/input-output modeling.

Government & public sector

Built for federal and state procurement.

CypressBit approaches government work as a documentation-first, standards-first discipline. Our current engagement is a response to a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) RFI to modernize the JOBMOD 4.0 tool — replacing spreadsheet-based economic modeling with a transparent, Python-based platform.

  • Project controls: kickoff within two weeks, draft/final work plans, risk logs, biweekly meetings, and monthly reports.
  • Full traceability — every data source, coefficient, and assumption tied to version and validation status.
  • Section 508 accessibility practices applied to dashboards, documents, charts, and downloadable outputs.
  • Available as a prime on the open market or as a subcontractor / teaming partner.

We publish our work.

Transparency isn’t a compliance checkbox for us — it’s how we build. Two of our platforms are public and auditable.

SMBS — Scalable Modular Backend System

An MIT-licensed collection of modular Django applications — CMS/pages, blog, forms, inventory, accounts, and more — that powers this website and our client platforms. In production since 2021.

Transportation I-O Modeling Lab

A self-funded R&D prototype demonstrating a transparent, Python-based input-output economic model — Leontief inverse, employment coefficients, a Py-Shiny dashboard, tests, and CI — built to align with FHWA JOBMOD modernization work.
